Black Point paddle

It is January 2022 but that doesn’t stop the Ohana Paddle Club from going on an adventure in San Pablo Bay. We met up at the Black Point boat launch where we were led to a navigation session by Shirley Heinemann. She had us reviewing our journey on a nautical map that she brought. In particular, she focused on the purpose of navigation, to not get lost and to think about some other factors that can affect your paddle? Additionally, she covered

  • Navigation Methods

  • Compass/bearing/triangulation

  • Dead reckoning: speed = time/distance

  • Taking ranges (visibility)

  • Boat traffic

    • Rules of the road

    • Angle off the bow (nose) or compass bearing

We learned a good lesson when we assumed that one of the day markers we found was the same one we expected on our journey map. It turned out to be a different marker and if she hadn’t had pointed that out, we might have taken ourselves off course!
